RULES AND INFORMATION
1. The General Rules of the Wise County Youth Fair and the following rules will govern the Beef Cattle Department.
Prospect and Market Steer Division
2. Market Steers must be ear tagged, tattooed, etc. at the county and/or state validated clinics to be eligible to show.
3. Exhibitors must check with the beef superintendent upon their arrival for stall assignments and exhibitors numbers.
4. All market steers and prospect steers must be trimmed before arrival on fair grounds. Minor touch up will be allowed.
THE MARKET AND PROSPECT STEERS SHOWS WILL BE BLOW & SHOW. NO PAINT, GLUE, ADHESIVE ETC.
5. The Prospect Steer show will be Friday. Followed by the Market Steer show.
6. Prospect steers may be entered with superintendent upon arrival. Only 2 prospect steers per exhibitor will be allowed to be shown.
7. Prospect steers classes will be broke after all entries received.
8. Steers must be dehorned, and all market animals must lead and be controllable or they will be barred from the show.
9. Steers will be put into weight classes by the superintendent after all weight cards are turned in on Wednesday. Those steers weighing less than 1,000 lbs. will be shown as prospect steers.
10. There will be three subdivisions for Market Steers:
American Breed and American Crossbreed Steers
British Breed and British Crossbreed Steers
European Breeds and Crossbreed Steers
11. Only market steers will be eligible for the Auction Sale. The Overall Grand and Reserve, and the Champion and Reserve from each division will be sold, then a percent of each division will be sold staying as close to twenty-six (26) lots. It will be divided by the total number of steer entries in all divisions based on a percentage will be in the sale. Give or take one (1) steer.
12. All seniors and juniors are eligible for showmanship in Market Steers.
13. Bedding: NO straw will be allowed in the stalls. Cedar or wood may be used if the exhibitor so desires.
14. Hair Rule: Steers must be shorn to not more than 1/4” on any location of the body, excluding the tail switch. Steers must be shorn before arrival onto the fairgrounds. Steers will be checked at weigh-in for the 1/4” length. Violation of the 1/4” uniform length over the entire body will result in immediate disqualification. Steers not shorn will be disqualified from showing. The decision of the superintendent will be final
ALL TRIM CHUTES ARE TO BE SET UP OUTSIDE THE BARNS. AFTER ANIMALS ARE IN PLACE AND IF SPACE IS AVAILABLE CHUTES WILL BE ALLOWED INSIDE.
CLASSES:
1. PROSPECT STEER
Classes and class breaks will be determined after all weight cards are turned in.

Reserve Champion Prospect Steer
2. MARKET STEER
There will be three subdivisions for Market Steers:
A. AMERICAN BREED AND AMERICAN CROSSBRED STEERS—Pureblood or crossbred Beefmaster, Brahman, Brangus, Red Brangus, Santa Gertrudis or Simbrah steers. All steers in this subdivision must show predominant breed characteristics of one of these breeds.
B. BRITISH BREED —Steers must be classified as Angus, Hereford, Polled Hereford, Shorthorn and Red Angus.
C. EUROPEAN BREEDS AND CROSS STEERS-
Will include any cross or other breed of steers not in
the above classes.
STEERS WILL BE CLASSIFIED. There will be three (3) classifiers. The judgment of breed classifiers is final and not subject to protest.
The superintendent shall determine number of steer classes in each subdivision after all steers are classified and weight cards are turned in.
A Champion and Reserve Champion steer will be selected from each of the subdivisions listed above and the Overall Grand Champion and Overall Reserve Grand Champion will then be selected.

Native Steer Division
15. NO entry fee will be required for this class.
16. The steer must have been conceived and born in Wise County.
17. All steers competing must have a certificate signed by breeder stating that the steer was conceived and born in Wise County.
18. All native steer verification forms must be turned in at the time of registration and/or tag in.
19. The highest placing steer of each class will be eligible to
compete.
20. An award will be presented to highest placing steer.
21. An award will be presented to the breeder of the highest placing steer.
22. Placing of steers in this class will have no effect on qualifying for the auction sale.
ALL TRIM CHUTES ARE TO BE SET UP OUTSIDE THE BARNS. AFTER ANIMALS ARE IN PLACE AND IF SPACE IS AVAILABLE CHUTES WILL BE ALLOWED INSIDE.
3. NATIVE STEER CLASS
American Heritage/Endangered Breed
- No entry fees.
- The breed must be one from the current or prior year Livestock Conservancy Conservation Priority List as Critical or Threatened.
- All entries must have a registration or certification signed by the breeder.
- All "Heritage/Endangered" verification forms must be turned in at the time of registration and /or tag in.
- The highest placing animal of each class within the species will be eligible to compete.
- An award will be presented to the highest placing animal within the species.
- Placing of these animals will have no effect on qualifying for the auction sale.
Native steer forms should be filled out, signed and mailed or emailed to WCYF by the entry deadline or turned in with weight cards at weigh-in/classification.
